“Hey! I’m sorry! I said I’m sorry! You don’t have to keep staring at me like that!” Nader waved his hand across my face. “I didn’t mean those things I said. I’m sorry…I just get carried away sometimes. I was in the moment.”
“It’s not too good to live in the moment.”
“Al, you need to li—”
“Live a little?”
“Whatever…”
As I turned my back to him, the bell rang. “I’m going to class. Do whatever you like with the CDs…I don’t care.”
By lunch time I was already starting to hear the buzz about the early release. By the end of the day, people were coming up to me telling me how good a job we did. I took it with a grain of salt, but Nader was ecstatic. On the way home from school, I told him that I wasn’t coming over. I was still aggravated by what he’d said earlier.
“What do you mean you’re not coming over?” He cut me off by walking backward ahead of me.
“You’re in the way.”
“Are you still mad?”
“It was the first day of school. Don’t you think I should go home? My parents are gonna want to know what happened.”
“That can wait…you sleep there. You should ditch them and come with me. Did you see how everyone was today? They loved it! We need to start working on a follow up ASAP. We need to capitalize!”
I kept walking. “Maybe tomorrow…I’m tired.”
The next day was the same routine. Nader begged me to spend time after school and work on a new release, but I declined. The first CD had just been to prove something to ourselves; it wasn’t meant to become my new pastime. I was content with where things were, but he was growing impatient. As the days rolled on, our fame began to decline, and we were becoming old news. The students had more important things to focus on. School had just begun, and everyone had adopted their own agenda trying to stay ahead of the game. No one was going to wait for another album to drop. Eventually Nader got tired of waiting on me and decided to announce a second project without my consent. I had no idea about it until people starting asking me about release dates. I never took the time to go see Nader and ask him about it. I figured eventually he would come after me and fill me in. It took him a week to relay the information to me.
I finally got my chance to speak to him, when he stopped me in the halls one afternoon.
“We’re fading out, Al. We can make a comeback, but I can’t do it alone. Let’s give this another go,” Nader said.
“Word on the street is you already got something up your sleeve.”
“Oh that? I just created a buzz, you know, something to keep their mouths going. But I got nothing, so we need to do this together.”
“Are you insane? Why won’t you let this go? You’re making this bigger than it actually is.
